Prof. Nenad Buzjak visited Aristotle University, Faculty of Sciences, School of Geology in Thessaloniki, Greece from 11 to 18 May, where he was hosted by Dr. Christos Pennos. The two have been collaborating for the third year on the Cardikarst.
The work in Thessaloniki was funded by the 2025 Academic Mobility Call of the University of Zagreb.
Prof. Buzjak gave a lecture on the karst of Croatia and the CARDIKARST project as part of the Physical Geography course. He was introduced to the basic field and laboratory methods of sedimentological research that he will use in joint research in Croatia. In return, he gave training on working with Onset data loggers for microclimatic research and shared CARDIKARST experience with measuring equipment. With Dr. Pennos, he conducted fieldwork in the Angitis Canyon and three caves for geomorphological research and microclimate features.
During his stay in Thessaloniki, the application process for the project “OpenSpeleoSense: A Low-Cost, Open-Source Environmental Sensing System for Collecting Long-Term Climatic FAIR Data in Caves” was completed by the applicant Hellenic Institute of Speleological Research in collaboration with CommonsLab and Aristotle University Thessaloniki, where he is one of the collaborators. The project is close to Cardikarst in that the goal is to develop hardware and software for measuring and recording data, which is a kind of upgrade of the activities we started with our project.
At the same time, work began on the application for the project at the invitation of the PRIMA Foundation. The time was also used to work on manuscripts with the results from CARDIKARST in collaboration with experts from Greece, Romania, Norway and Croatia.
